H. Virgil Carter

H. Virgil Carter, age 88, of Baxley died Friday, October 22, 2021 at his residence.

Mr. Carter was born September 7, 1933 in Appling County to the late John M. Carter and the late Beatrice Page Carter. He was a retired vocational school teacher and former Superintendent with Appling County Board of Education. Mr. Carter was a member of Surrency Free Will Baptist Church and was an ordained Free Will Baptist Pastor, having served in various churches for 44 years. He also served as Appling County Commission Chairman. He was a member of the Appling County Exchange Club, Baxley Kiwanis Club, the Baxley Jaycees, and founded the Appling County String Band. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Merle Carter Luke.

Survivors include his wife of 68 years, Betty Cross Carter; son & daughter-in-law, Mike & Debbie Carter; daughters & sons-in-law, Debbie & A. P. Hunter and Dawn & Mark Melton; grandchildren, Doug Hall, Misty (Jared) Stone, Candice (Dax) Brown, and Marley Melton; great grandchildren, Chance Vaughn, Brayden Vaughn, Brantley Vaughn, and Hudson Stone; and sister, Shelba (Ronnie) Tucker. Special caretakers, Lori Futch Bruna, Brenda Rozier, and Star Spearel also survive.

Funeral services will be held Sunday, October 24, 2021 from the Chapel of Swain Funeral Home at 3:00 p.m. with Rev. Rick Brown, Rev. Joey Andrews, and Rev. Lamar Lee officiating.

Interment will follow in Memorial Free Will Baptist Church Cemetery.

Active pallbearers will be Doug Hall, Chance Vaughn, Brayden Vaughn, Brantley Vaughn, Hudson Stone, Jerad Stone, and Darrell Holcomb.

Honorary pallbearers will be all friends in attendance.

Visitation will be one hour prior to the service at Swain Funeral Home.
